“Are you not entertained?” is a memorable quote from the movie Gladiator. It has since been adapted for use in reaction images and is often used as the caption to an image. The concept of “Are You Not Entertained?” is similar to the “Come at me, Bro” image macro series. The phrase “are you not entertained?” is based on the line “I am not entertained” uttered by Maximus Decimus Meridius in the film Gladiator.

Today’s culture is geared towards fast-paced, high-tech entertainment. David Foster Wallace wrote Infinite Jest in the early 1990s, when televisions were packed with channels and the news was broadcast twenty-four hours a day. Video games were taking over the minds of young kids, and blockbuster movies were raking in unheard of amounts of cash each summer. The world we live in is a very different place than it used to be.
