If you want to know how to draw a face, there are three main areas to work on. These areas are the nose, chin and cheek. Drawing a face step by step can be hard especially if you are just starting out. The best thing to do is get some tutorial videos or e-books to help you. These are all available online, so you can learn how to draw a face as easily as possible.

  • Start by creating the basic outline. This helps us understand how to draw a face. The first step is to create the outline by creating the inner circle. Next we draw the outermost part of this circle, which is known as the base. From here we can continue to draw the outside most area of the circle, which is known as the tip.
  • Step 2: To complete our first tutorial we need to add some more details to our drawing. We draw the tip again by intersecting our first circle with our second one. Next we draw the outermost edge of our tip, which is known as the nasal tip. Using these tips we can now create more detailed facial features.
  • Step 3: To get the final touch we draw some shading onto our faces. We use dark shading to soften the look of our features. Some great shading techniques include shadowing, low lighting and high contrast. shadows play an important role when drawing faces because it helps us make them more 3-dimensional. Dark shading makes the eyes larger and the cheeks and hairline more defined.
  • The Loomis Method. Another simple approach to drawing heads is by using the Loomis method. This is a classic portrait drawing technique which has been around for hundreds of years. The Loomis method is also known as the invisible circle technique.

When we draw the Loomis method we draw a circle on the inside upper border of our face. Then we draw two small dots inside this circle. These small dots will be our facial features. We now need to add shading to the inside of our circle to make our facial features stand out.

  • Step 4: Using the pen tool, draw some thin vertical lines across the inside of our circle. When these lines are blended with the light lines that are inside our face, you will notice that they now form a perfect outline for your nose. This is how we outline the nose in portrait drawing. Now take a pencil and trace along the inside corners of our eyes. Try varying the thickness of the line to achieve a different effect. You can also try varying the width of your strokes to give your face more definition.

The simple approach: Shaping the lower face according to your face’s natural proportions by following the natural eye rolling motion from the eyebrows to the tip of the nose. You should move the Loomis so that it rests gently on the eyebrows. You do not need to use much fill. You do not need to sharpen or soften your edges while following these proportions as they are easier to obtain than you think.

  • Step 5: Once you’ve mastered the proportions, you can add a little more detail by using the Loomis to vary your width. To do this, draw a line that directly connects the center of your eyes to your center of the face. Use the Loomis to get the width needed for the eyes. Make sure that the Loomis is centered over your eyes when you are done drawing the width.
  • Step 6: Learn how to create a more 3-dimensional facial feature by making the eyes, nose and mouth bigger. To do this, make the eyes slightly larger than their center. The center of your eyes would be about the same size as your orbital rim. Your nasal bridge will be a smaller distance between your nostrils as its width. Use your Loomsis to get the width needed for your cheeks and lips.
  • Step 7: Shading your facial features begins with the beard and then goes on to your moustache. You can begin by drawing your beard in one long line. Use a darker beard color than your hair. Then create a lighter, facial shade for your moustache and upper lip. Use a darker shade of shaded moustache for the teeth in your mouth.
